What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is a specialised therapy designed to assist athletes and active individuals in preparing for, recovering from, and enhancing their physical performance. Performed by qualified Myotherapists and Remedial Massage Therapists, it utilises techniques like deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching. Sports massage is tailored to reduce muscle tension, alleviate soreness, promote recovery, and address a range of sports-related injuries.
Benefits of Sports Massage
How Sports Massage Works.
Sports massage enhances athletic performance by improving flexibility, strength, and muscle condition. It helps reduce muscle fatigue, alleviates soreness, and accelerates recovery from injuries or intense physical activity. By targeting muscle imbalances and tightness, sports massage aids in injury prevention and promotes faster recovery, ensuring athletes can perform at their best.
Feel Better For Longer
How Sports Massage Can Help.
Our skilled sports massage therapists utilise a variety of techniques tailored to your specific needs to enhance your performance and accelerate recovery. By combining deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, stretching, and other remedial modalities like myofascial release and cupping, our therapists address muscle imbalances, reduce pain, and prevent future injuries. These personalised treatments optimise your body, helping you reach peak physical performance and maintain long-term musculoskeletal health.
What Can I Expect in a Sports Massage Session?
In a sports massage session, your remedial sports therapist will focus on your specific athletic goals, using sports-specific manual therapy techniques to assess, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Whether addressing acute injuries, managing chronic issues, or preventing future injuries, each session will aim to reduce pain, enhance your recovery, and improve muscle function. By targeting key areas of tension and imbalance, we will help to optimise your body for peak physical performance and sustained athletic success.

Sports Massage is a form of Remedial massage and is not directly covered by Medicare in Australia. However, if you have a chronic condition managed under a GP’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you may receive limited Medicare rebates for certain allied health services, which sometimes includes sports massage (remedial massage) when provided by practitioners with eligible qualifications. For most clients, private health insurance remains the primary avenue for remedial massage rebates. At Melbourne Myotherapy Centre, we do not currently provide services linked to Medicare or the NDIS. Please speak to your GP for more information.

For a sports massage session, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing or activewear that’s easy to move in and remove if needed. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to remove clothing related to the area being treated. Draping will always be used to maintain your modesty, privacy and comfort. For treatments targeting specific areas (like legs, shoulders, or back), it’s helpful to wear shorts or a sports bra. Your comfort is our top priority, so if you’re unsure, please do not hesitate to ask in advance so you can be prepared and feel comfortable.
After a sports massage, it’s common to feel relaxed, looser, and sometimes slightly sore—similar to how you might feel after a workout. This is due to deep tissue work that helps release tension and improve circulation. You may also notice improved flexibility and reduced muscle tightness. Mild soreness can last 24–48 hours and usually fades as your body recovers. Staying hydrated, doing gentle stretching, and resting will support the recovery process. Most clients feel noticeably better within a day or two and experience enhanced performance and mobility in the days following.
