What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage therapy is a manual therapy that uses evidence-based techniques to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It targets specific problem areas in muscles, tendons, and soft tissues to reduce pain, tension, and inflammation. Remedial massage can reduce pain, improve flexibility and range of motion, while promoting faster recovery from both injuries and stress. It’s particularly effective for chronic pain, sports injuries, and postural imbalances, supporting long-term physical health and well-being.

What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during a Sports Massage session?

A remedial massage session typically begins with a comprehensive assessment including health history, postural analysis, and movement testing to identify pain sources. Treatment may involve targeted manual therapy, myofascial release, cupping, and other appropriate techniques. Sessions usually last 30-60 minutes, and patients remain clothed or partially clothed depending on the treatment area.

How much does Remedial Massage cost?

Remedial massage costs can vary based on a number of factors including session length (30-60 minutes), therapist qualifications and experience, and specific techniques used. At Melbourne Myotherapy Centre, we offer a flat rate per therapist per session (30, 45 and 60 minute sessions) and all modalities/techniques can be incorporated into your treatment. Private health insurance rebates are also available on all services at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre. If you would like to see a full list of our prices, please visit our fees page.

Is it normal to feel sore after Remedial Massage?

Yes, it’s perfectly normal to experience some soreness for 24-48 hours after remedial massage, especially after deep tissue work or if treating chronic conditions. This is called post-massage soreness and is similar to how muscles feel after exercise. It occurs as circulation increases to areas that were treated, flushing out metabolic waste and bringing fresh nutrients to tissues. The soreness should be mild to moderate and typically resolves quickly. Drinking plenty of water, taking a warm bath, and gentle movement can help reduce this temporary sensation.

Are there any risks associated with Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is generally very safe, but potential risks include temporary soreness or bruising, particularly after deep tissue work. More serious complications are rare but may include skin irritation, temporary increased pain, or bruising in clients taking blood-thinning medications. Remedial massage is not recommended in certain conditions including infectious skin diseases or open wounds, recent injuries or surgeries, some blood conditions or blot clots, some cancers, or acute inflammation. Always provide your therapist with complete health information and inform them immediately if you experience discomfort during treatment.

You can book your appointment online through our website where you have access in real-time to our available times, dates and therapists. What are the benefits of Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage offers significant benefits including pain reduction, improved circulation, enhanced flexibility and range of motion, faster injury healing, reduced muscle tension and spasms, stress reduction, improved posture, better sleep quality, and prevention of future injuries. Regular sessions can help manage chronic conditions, support athletic performance, and maintain overall musculoskeletal health. By addressing both acute problems and chronic patterns, remedial massage provides both immediate relief and long-term improvements in physical function.

What should I expect after a Remedial Massage session?

After a remedial massage, most people experience immediate relief and relaxation, though some may feel temporarily tired. Increased hydration is important as it helps flush metabolic waste released during treatment. You may notice improved mobility, better posture, and reduced pain in the hours and days following. Some people experience mild soreness for 24-48 hours, particularly after deep tissue work. Some treatments may require additional or multiple sessions before you see considerable improvements. Your therapist will provide specific aftercare recommendations which may include gentle stretching, hot/cold application, or temporary activity modifications.

Do I need a referral to see a Remedial Massage therapist?

No, you don’t need a referral to book a remedial massage session. You can contact Melbourne Myotherapy Centre and make an appointment with a remedial massage therapist directly. However, if you’re seeking coverage through WorkCover, TAC, or other compensation schemes for work or accident-related injuries, you’ll need a referral from your doctor. Similarly, if you’re hoping to access remedial massage through a Chronic Disease Management plan under Medicare, a GP referral is required. Many clients find it helpful to discuss remedial massage with their doctor as part of their overall health management. Please contact us for more information if you would like to access these referral services. Please note, we do not currently provide services linked to the NDIS.

Is Remedial Massage covered by Medicare?

Remedial massage is not directly covered by Medicare in Australia. However, if you have a chronic condition managed under a GP’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you may receive limited Medicare rebates for certain allied health services, which sometimes includes remedial massage when provided by practitioners with eligible qualifications. WorkCover and TAC may cover remedial massage for work or transport accident-related injuries with appropriate referrals. For most clients, private health insurance remains the primary avenue for remedial massage rebates. At Melbourne Myotherapy Centre, we do not currently provide services linked to Medicare or the NDIS. Please speak to your GP for more information.

What happens during a Remedial Massage session?

Your first remedial massage session will begin with a thorough consultation about your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. The therapist will conduct assessments such as range of motion testing and postural analysis before treatment. The massage treatment then combines various techniques focused on problem areas, and your therapist will check in about pressure preferences. Initial sessions at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre typically last 45-60 minutes with some follow-up options as short as 30-minutes and conclude with re-evaluating the problem area and aftercare advice. If you would like more information, please contact us with any questions, or you can book an appointment and start feeling better, for longer.
