What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a Myotherapist?

No, you don’t need a referral to see a myotherapist for standard treatment. You can book directly with any myotherapist at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre. However, if you’re seeking coverage through Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management plan or through WorkCover/TAC for work/accident-related injuries, you’ll need a GP referral. Similarly, NDIS participants need to have myotherapy included in their approved plan. Regardless of referral status, it’s helpful to bring any relevant medical reports or imaging to your first appointment to assist with assessment. Please note, we do not currently provide services linked to the NDIS.

Are there any risks associated with Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is generally safe when performed by a qualified therapist. Minor side effects like post-treatment soreness or markings/bruising may occur, but serious complications are rare.

What does Myotherapy treat?

Myotherapy effectively treats soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement caused by muscle or myofascial dysfunction common in a number of conditions related to neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain. It’s particularly beneficial for persistent pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments. Myotherapists work with the muscular system, fascia, and nervous system to restore function and relieve pain.

How much does Myotherapy cost?

Myotherapy costs can vary based on a number of factors including session length (30-60 minutes), therapist qualifications and experience, and specific techniques used. At Melbourne Myotherapy Centre, we offer a flat rate per therapist per session (30, 45 and 60 minute sessions) and all modalities/techniques can be incorporated into your treatment. Private health insurance rebates are also available on all services at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre. If you would like to see a full list of our prices, please visit our fees page.

What are the benefits of Myotherapy?

Myotherapy offers numerous benefits including effective pain relief, improved mobility and function, correction of postural imbalances, enhanced athletic performance, faster injury recovery, and prevention of recurring issues. It’s particularly effective for chronic conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments. By addressing the root causes of pain rather than just symptoms, myotherapy provides longer-lasting results than general massage and helps clients develop better body awareness and movement patterns.

Is it normal to feel sore after Myotherapy?

Yes, it’s completely normal to experience some soreness for 24-48 hours after myotherapy, particularly after your first session or when treating chronic conditions. This is known as post-treatment soreness and is similar to the feeling after a workout. It occurs as your body responds to the release of trigger points, increased blood flow, and fascial changes. The soreness should be mild to moderate and typically resolves quickly. Applying heat, gentle stretching, and staying hydrated can help reduce this temporary discomfort.

Is Myotherapy covered by Private Health Insurance?

Many Australian private health funds provide rebates for myotherapy under extras cover, typically under “remedial massage” or specific “myotherapy” categories. Coverage varies between providers and policy levels. Most major funds including Medibank, BUPA, HCF, and NIB offer some level of coverage. All myotherapists at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre have provider numbers with all the major private health funds and will provide an official receipt with their provider details. Please check with your health fund before booking to confirm your coverage details and any claiming requirements.

What is the difference between Myotherapy and Remedial Massage?

While both myotherapy and remedial massage involve hands-on treatment, myotherapy is more clinical and diagnostic than remedial massage. Myotherapists have advanced training with either an Advanced Diploma in Myotherapy or a Bachelors of Health Science (Clinical Myotherapy) and use assessment techniques to identify the root causes of pain. They employ a broader range of treatment methods including dry needling, muscle energy technique, and corrective exercises. Remedial massage focuses primarily on muscular pain and tension, while myotherapy addresses complex musculoskeletal conditions and their underlying causes.
