What do you wear to a Remedial Massage session?

For a remedial massage session, you’ll typically undress to your level of comfort but only where you and the therapist have agreed to be treated, as this allows the therapist proper access to muscles and tissues. You will never be asked by our therapists to remove your underwear while we may need to move it slightly to access specific areas of your glutes, upper hamstrings, quads or adductors. You’ll be professionally draped with towels or sheets throughout the session, with only the area being worked on exposed. You should arrive wearing loose, comfortable clothing like shorts and a tank top which allow you to remain comfortable even if you prefer the therapist to treat you through your clothes. For women, bras with clips are preferred as they provide easier access to your back without compromising your overall comfort. Always communicate your preferences with your therapist, as maintaining your comfort and dignity is a priority.

What should I expect after a Sports Massage session?

After a sports massage, it’s common to feel relaxed, looser, and sometimes slightly sore—similar to how you might feel after a workout. This is due to deep tissue work that helps release tension and improve circulation. You may also notice improved flexibility and reduced muscle tightness. Mild soreness can last 24–48 hours and usually fades as your body recovers. Staying hydrated, doing gentle stretching, and resting will support the recovery process. Most clients feel noticeably better within a day or two and experience enhanced performance and mobility in the days following.

Is it normal to feel sore after a Sports Massage?

Yes, it’s completely normal to feel sore after a sports massage—especially if deep tissue techniques were used. This temporary soreness is a natural response as your muscles release tension, adhesions, and built-up toxins. It typically lasts 24–48 hours and can feel similar to post-workout soreness. Staying hydrated, applying heat or cold, and gentle movement can help ease any discomfort. The benefits—such as improved mobility, reduced muscle tightness, and faster recovery—usually follow shortly after.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues, targeting chronic muscle tension and pain. Unlike relaxation massages, it uses slow, firm strokes and concentrated pressure to release knots and adhesions. This therapy is effective for conditions like chronic neck pain, back pain, sports injuries, and limited mobility. While it may involve some discomfort, it aims to restore function and alleviate deep-seated tension.

Is it normal to feel sore after Remedial Massage?

Yes, it’s perfectly normal to experience some soreness for 24-48 hours after remedial massage, especially after deep tissue work or if treating chronic conditions. This is called post-massage soreness and is similar to how muscles feel after exercise. It occurs as circulation increases to areas that were treated, flushing out metabolic waste and bringing fresh nutrients to tissues. The soreness should be mild to moderate and typically resolves quickly. Drinking plenty of water, taking a warm bath, and gentle movement can help reduce this temporary sensation.

Myotherapy

Do I need a referral to see a Myotherapist?

No, you don’t need a referral to see a myotherapist for standard treatment. You can book directly with any myotherapist at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre. However, if you’re seeking coverage through Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management plan or through WorkCover/TAC for work/accident-related injuries, you’ll need a GP referral. Similarly, NDIS participants need to have myotherapy included in their approved plan. Regardless of referral status, it’s helpful to bring any relevant medical reports or imaging to your first appointment to assist with assessment. Please note, we do not currently provide services linked to the NDIS.

What does Myotherapy treat?

Myotherapy effectively treats soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement caused by muscle or myofascial dysfunction common in a number of conditions related to neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain. It’s particularly beneficial for persistent pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments. Myotherapists work with the muscular system, fascia, and nervous system to restore function and relieve pain.

What can I expect during a Myotherapy session?

A myotherapy session typically begins with a comprehensive assessment including health history, postural analysis, and movement testing to identify pain sources. Treatment may involve targeted manual therapy, dry needling, myofascial release, cupping, and other appropriate techniques. Your myotherapist will also provide personalised advice on posture, movement patterns, and stretching or exercises to maintain results. Sessions usually last 30-60 minutes, and patients remain clothed or partially clothed depending on the treatment area.

What are the risks associated with Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is generally safe when performed by qualified practitioners, but minor temporary side effects may include post-treatment soreness, mild bruising from techniques like cupping or dry needling, fatigue, or temporary symptom aggravation. More serious risks are rare but may include infection from dry needling (minimised by proper hygiene protocols) or complications for those with certain medical conditions. To ensure safety, always disclose your complete medical history, including allegies, medications, pregnancy, and conditions like osteoporosis, cancer, or blood disorders before treatment.

Is Myotherapy covered by Private Health Insurance?

Many Australian private health funds provide rebates for myotherapy under extras cover, typically under “remedial massage” or specific “myotherapy” categories. Coverage varies between providers and policy levels. Most major funds including Medibank, BUPA, HCF, and NIB offer some level of coverage. All myotherapists at Melbourne Myotherapy Centre have provider numbers with all the major private health funds and will provide an official receipt with their provider details. Please check with your health fund before booking to confirm your coverage details and any claiming requirements.

Who can benefit from Myotherapy?

Myotherapy benefits a wide range of people including those with chronic pain conditions, office workers with postural issues, athletes seeking performance enhancement or injury recovery, people recovering from surgery or trauma, individuals with repetitive strain injuries, or people with conditions like cervicogenic headaches, or chronic neck pain or back pain. It’s suitable for people of all ages and activity levels who are experiencing pain or restricted movement, whether from specific injuries or general lifestyle factors.

Is Myotherapy covered by Medicare?

Myotherapy is not typically covered by Medicare as a standalone service. However, if you have a chronic condition, you may be eligible for limited coverage through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly Enhanced Primary Care or EPC) arranged by your GP. This requires referral to a myotherapist who is also qualified in an eligible profession like physiotherapy. The NDIS may fund myotherapy for eligible participants if included in their approved plan. For most clients, private health insurance remains the primary avenue for myotherapy rebates. At Melbourne Myotherapy Centre, we do not currently provide services linked to Medicare or the NDIS. Please speak to your GP for more information.

What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy that focuses on the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Remedial massage is generally very safe, but potential risks include temporary soreness or bruising, particularly after deep tissue work. More serious complications are rare but may include skin irritation, temporary increased pain, or bruising in clients taking blood-thinning medications. Always provide your therapist with complete health information and inform them immediately if you experience discomfort during treatment.

Is Remedial Massage different to normal massage?

Remedial massage differs significantly from standard relaxation or “normal” massage. While relaxation massage uses gentle, flowing strokes to promote general wellbeing and stress reduction, remedial massage is more targeted and therapeutic. Our remedial therapists have advanced training in anatomy and pathology, allowing them to assess specific problems and develop treatment plans. The techniques are more focused on assessing and addressing dysfunction rather than general relaxation. Remedial massage may involve deeper pressure and more specific techniques like trigger point therapy, myofascial release or cupping therapy.
